Berets are part of the uniform of military units around the world. Usually soldiers wear them skewed to the right side, but in some European armies (such as French), are worn skewed to the left side. The color of beret most frequently indicates a kind of military formation to which belongs the soldier wearing it. The history of the use of military beret dates back to at least the sixteenth century, when the dashing beret was a fixture of extravagant clothes of landsknecht. To the formal uniform of modern armies, the beret was first introduced in the late nineteenth century, when in France, a branch of Alpine rifles was created.
